Meeting Place: On Street parking at the end of Beresford Street West – See photos below and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets at each end of the park and a drinking fountain. There is also an amazing children’s playground and tennis court.
Route: Starting at the Beresford street end we meander up wide sealed paths surrounded by beautiful established trees. These include Morton Bay Fig trees and many different natives. Western Park ends up right in the heart of Ponsonby shops and is one of Auckland’s oldest parks. It is a city oasis of greenery established in 1879. At the Ponsonby end there are some unusual sculptures by artist John Radford. Parts of the route are a bit hilly but it is a fairly easy walk for most.
Directions: From the south, take the Nelson Street exit from the southern
motorway and take the left lane, continue on Union Street, left into Wellington St, left into Hepburn and then Beresford St. From North, take the Cook St exit and after Placemakers, slight right onto Sam Wrigley St, Union St, turn right onto Wellington St, left into Hepburn St and left into Beresford St.
Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.
On leash/Off leash: Most of the walk is on lead but there is an off leash area at the upper (Ponsonby) end of the walk. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.
