Route: Bethells is a wild surf beach that stretches 2 kms along the west coast and is made up of volcanic sand. It is a stunning landscape of unstable dunes, cliffs, rocks, a stream and caves. Endangered dotterels nest in the dunes and sometimes blue penguins roost in the sea cave at the south end of the beach – dogs must be on a lead on this part of the beach. Across the outflow of the Waitakere River is a great off leash area in Waitakere Bay. We will be crossing this river (which is usually ankle deep) so wear suitable footwear that can easily be removed or is able to get wet e.g. crocs.

At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Swanson Rd. Continue through Swanson and veer left into Scenic Dr. Turn right into Te Henga Rd and continue straight ahead onto Bethells Rd to the beach.
