Meeting Place: Karangahake Gorge Reserve Car Park. Look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets and water station there.
Route: The walk is mostly easy with a metal track but can get muddy at times so bring gumboots. There are also a few old rail tunnels so a torch could be useful as they can be dark (even though lit). The walk is a great exploration of the old mining days with remains of old train tracks and tunnels and a swing bridge (not sure how your beagle handles bridges so be aware). It is a gold heritage site and an historical wonderland. The scenery is amazing with views of the river and natural bush and deep valleys.
Directions: This gorge is 13 kms from Waihi and 8 kms from Paeroa. Located on State Highway 2, just south of Paeroa, it is about a 2-hour drive (130km) from Auckland and almost an hour from Hamilton. It is well signposted and parking is available right off the highway.
Walk Time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
On leash/Off leash: This is an on leash area at all times. It is unusual for dogs to be allowed onto a Dept of Conservation area but dogs can walk some trails here if on a leash. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.
Cup of Tea anyone? Can I please encourage you all to stay and socialize after the walk? The club will be providing free morning tea for members. Non-members welcome to join, koha donation.
Remember: It is advisable not to leave any valuables in vehicles, and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for poor weather conditions and off road walking.
Don’t forget to take water and poo bags for your dogs.
