Beagle Walk – Sun 17th July – Lake Kainui, Horsham Downs, Hamilton

Lake KainuiMeeting Place: Car Park opposite 398 Lake Rd Horsham Downs- off Lake Rd and down the driveway at the bottom– see photos below and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets here but be advised – it is a long drop!!

Route: This is a very picturesque flat walk with a metal track suitable for prams and wheelchairs. Lake Kanui is a peat lake of about 25 hectares. Most of the areas with larger trees have been turned into Fairy Forests with elaborate decorations by schoolchildren. The walk is exposed to wind off the lake so dress appropriately. The
lake is sometimes subject to algae bloom after heavy rains so look for the warning signs and dogs should not go in the water or drink it. Please note there are no rubbish bins on the walk.

Directions: Coming from the North, head south on SHW 1
* Take the Gordonton/Taupiri exit
* Keep left to continue on Gordonton Road/SHW 1B, follow signs for Cambridge
* After 5.4 Kms, turn Right onto Lake Road (signs for Horotui)
* Travel 4.8 Kms to arrive at entrance of Lake Kainui (Lake D) on your right
* Parking down the drive way.

From South
* Take SHW 1 & turn off at Ngaruawahia/Horotui off ramp
* Take first exit at round about toward Horotui
* Turn right at the lights onto Horotui Bridge Road over bridge to roundabout
* Take first left onto River Road
* Drive 400m and turn Right onto Lake Road (Signs for Horsham Downs)
* Stay on Lake Road 4.1 Kms and turn left where it meets with Horsham Downs Road at a T intersection and entrance to Lake Kainui is on left about 1 Km

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

On leash/Off leash: This is an on lead walk at all times because there may be nesting waterfowl. Fine of $300 applies if caught off leash. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

mangere mountainMeeting Place: Car Park on Domain Rd, Mangere Bridge, by the Memorial Hall. Look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag.

Route: Mangere Mountain – Te Pane o Mataaoho – is located within Mangere Domain and is Auckland’s best preserved dormant volcanic cone. It sits 106 metres above sea level. The views across the Manukau harbor and surrounding suburbs are to die for. To get to the top it’s mostly an easy walk on a mixture of gravel and grass path/track but there are some steep parts and concrete stairs so a moderate level of fitness is required. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Can be muddy and slippery if wet.

Directions: From the city heading south on the southern motorway, take exit 12 toward Mangere Bridge village. Turn right onto Rimu Rd and left into Crawford Ave and then right onto Hastie Ave and then continue on to Domain Drive. From the south heading north take the Mangere Bridge exit. Turn right onto Coronation Rd and left onto Domain Rd.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

On leash/Off leash: This is an on-lead walk for the most part but there are some off leash areas. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

Meeting Place: Car Park on Brownlee Place – which is off Reynolds Rd- look out for the Auckland Beagle Club Flag. Please note that there are toilets across the road at the Rugby Club.

Route: This is a metal track and concrete path around a pond and lovely leafy reserve. Mostly easy walk with a few hilly spots with resting places.

Directions:From the southern motorway take exit 461 at Drury for state highway 22 toward Pukekohe. Continue on to state Highway 22 and after approx. 1 km turn left onto McPherson Rd and then right onto Burtt Rd. After approx. 6 kms turn right onto Tuhimata Rd and then left onto Cape Hill Rd. Continue straight onto Valley Rd and then at the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Reynolds Rd.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

Location: Waiatarua Reserve

Meeting Place: Carpark off Abbots Way (not the main carpark on Grand Drive).
Look for Beagle Club flag at the car park entrance off 98 Abbots Way.

Route: This is a lovely peaceful wetland walk and reserve with wide open spaces. Very easy walk on mostly concrete paths with a pond and children’s playground. The area around and in the playground and wetlands are on leash but the open reserve is an offleash area. There are toilets at the carpark on Grand drive.

Directions: From Southern Motorway – Get off at Greenlane toward Remuera on Greenlane East. Turn right onto Peach Parade. Turn right onto Ladies Mile. Turn Left onto Abbots Way.

Walk Time: Approximately 50 minutes.

On leash/Off leash: See above. The walk is on lead in some parts but off leash in the open reserve spaces. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

Please note that due to covid cases in the community, and for the safety of all, we will be supplying only individually wrapped snacks and bottled water/juice.

Beagle Walk – Sun 20th March – Mairangi Bay

Location: Mairangi Bay Cliff top

Meeting Place: Carpark on Montrose Terrace Mairangi Bay. Look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets and a children’s playground close by. See the photo of the carpark.

Route: This is a coastal walk along a trail which starts at Mairangi Bay and ends at Murrays Bay and then return loop. It’s a concrete path which is hilly at times but the views are lovely. It’s an onlead walk and is approx 4km.

Directions: Northern Motorway- get off at Tristram Ave. Use the right two lanes
and follow signs for East Coast bays/Forrest Hill. Turn left onto Forrest Hill Rd and at the roundabout take 2nd exit onto East Coast Rd heading to  Mairangi Bay. Turn right onto Matipo Rd and right again onto Ramsgate Tce. At the roundabout take 2nd exit onto Montrose Tce.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

Beagle Walk – Sun 20th February – Riverhead

Location: Riverhead
Date: Sunday 20th February 2022

Meeting Place: There is a carpark on Barlow Road, in a layby- see photos on the right. Look out for the Club flag. Please note- there are no toilets here.

Route: Mostly dirt track and may be slippery in places if it’s raining. It gets muddy so will require boots in wet weather but running shoes mostly ok. Very scenic shady walk with soft trails and a glorious forest setting. The odd hill but mostly flat moderate level of skill required. The trail is shared with bikes and horses so keep an eye out.

Directions: About 35- 40 mins from the CBD. Barlow Rd runs off Ararimu Valley Rd (at approx. no 465). Depending on where you live, there are multiple ways to get to the forest. But for those of you who will be using the North western Motorway continue straight through the roundabout at the end of the Northwestern Motorway. After approx. 2km (after another roundabout) take a right onto Old North Rd. At the next roundabout continue straight (staying on old North Rd). Continue on Old North
Rd for another 4km then turn right onto Ararimu Valley Rd. After approx. 5km (about 465 Ararimu Rd) turn right onto Barlow Rd (it is easy to miss as not well indicated but if you hit Zanders rd, you have gone too far).

Walk Time: Approximately 60+ minutes.

On leash/Off leash: On lead recommended but is an off-leash area. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

Beagle Walk – Sun 25th July – Western Park, Freemans Bay

Location: Western Park, Freemans Bay

Meeting Place: On Street parking at the end of Beresford Street West – See photos below and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets at each end of the park and a drinking fountain. There is also an amazing children’s playground and tennis court.

Route: Starting at the Beresford street end we meander up wide sealed paths surrounded by beautiful established trees. These include Morton Bay Fig trees and many different natives. Western Park ends up right in the heart of Ponsonby shops and is one of Auckland’s oldest parks. It is a city oasis of greenery established in 1879. At the Ponsonby end there are some unusual sculptures by artist John Radford. Parts of the route are a bit hilly but it is a fairly easy walk for most.

Directions: From the south, take the Nelson Street exit from the southern
motorway and take the left lane, continue on Union Street, left into Wellington St, left into Hepburn and then Beresford St. From North, take the Cook St exit and after Placemakers, slight right onto Sam Wrigley St, Union St, turn right onto Wellington St, left into Hepburn St and left into Beresford St.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

On leash/Off leash: Most of the walk is on lead but there is an off leash area at the upper (Ponsonby) end of the walk. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

Beagle Walk – Sun 20th June – Botanic Gardens, Manurewa

Location: Botanic Gardens, Manurewa
Date: Sunday 20th June 2021

Parking: On Charles Prevost Drive or a carpark

Meeting Place: Park your car on Charles Prevost Drive (opposite number 61 or thereabouts) and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There is a carpark nearby but that is often full. There are toilets close by.

Route: Dogs are permitted in the Botanic gardens but must be on leash. There is an off leash area at the northern end near the Totara Park  end. These gardens are a lush and magnificent place to visit. There is even a children’s garden and a play area. There are mostly concrete paths suitable for most ages and mobility. A few dirt paths and slight inclines. May require boots in very wet weather but running shoes mostly ok. There is a café and visitors center. Very scenic walk with lots of themed gardens and home to more than 10,000 plants from around the world. More relaxed than most botanic gardens.

Directions: About 35-40 mins from the CBD. Travelling south on the Southern Motorway (SH1) exit at the Manurewa /Hill road exit (exit 451). Turn left onto Hill Road and the main entrance is the first driveway on the left. Charles Prevost Drive is off Hill Road.
