[Cancelled] Beagle Walk – Sun 29th August – Lake Kainui, Horsham Downs, Hamilton

Date: Sunday 29th August 2021
Time: 9.45am for a 10am start

Meeting Place: Car Park opposite 398 Lake Rd, Horsham Downs – off Lake Rd and down the driveway at the bottom – see photos below and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets here but be advised – it is a long drop!!

Route: This is a very picturesque flat walk with a metal track suitable for prams and wheelchairs. Lake Kanui is a peat lake of about 25 hectares. Most of the areas with larger trees have been turned into Fairy Forests with elaborate decorations by schoolchildren. The walk is exposed to wind off the lake so dress appropriately. The lake is sometimes subject to algae bloom after heavy rains so look for the warning signs and dogs should not go in the water or drink it. Please note there are no rubbish bins on the walk.

Directions:
<From North>
Head south on SHW 1
Take the Gordonton/Taupiri exit
Keep left to continue on Gordonton Road/SHW 1B, follow signs for Cambridge
After 5.4 Kms, turn Right onto Lake Road (signs for Horotui)
Travel 4.8 Kms to arrive at entrance of Lake Kainui (Lake D) on your right
Parking down the drive way
<From South>
Take SHW 1 & turn off at Ngaruawahia/Horotui off ramp
Take first exit at round about toward Horotui
Turn right at the lights onto Horotui Bridge Road – over bridge to roundabout
Take first left onto River Road
Drive 400m and turn Right onto Lake Road (Signs for Horsham Downs)
Stay on Lake Road 4.1 Kms and turn left where it meets with Horsham Downs Road at a T intersection and entrance to Lake Kainui is on left about 1 Km.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

On leash/Off leash: This is an on lead walk at all times because there may be nesting waterfowl. Fine of $300 applies if caught off leash. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

Beagle Walk – Sun 25th July – Western Park, Freemans Bay

Location: Western Park, Freemans Bay
Date: Sunday 25th July 2021
Time: 9.45am for a 10am start

Meeting Place: On Street parking at the end of Beresford Street West – See photos below and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets at each end of the park and a drinking fountain. There is also an amazing children’s playground and tennis court.

Route: Starting at the Beresford street end we meander up wide sealed paths surrounded by beautiful established trees. These include Morton Bay Fig trees and many different natives. Western Park ends up right in the heart of Ponsonby shops and is one of Auckland’s oldest parks. It is a city oasis of greenery established in 1879. At the Ponsonby end there are some unusual sculptures by artist John Radford. Parts of the route are a bit hilly but it is a fairly easy walk for most.

Directions: From the south, take the Nelson Street exit from the southern
motorway and take the left lane, continue on Union Street, left into Wellington St, left into Hepburn and then Beresford St. From North, take the Cook St exit and after Placemakers, slight right onto Sam Wrigley St, Union St, turn right onto Wellington St, left into Hepburn St and left into Beresford St.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

On leash/Off leash: Most of the walk is on lead but there is an off leash area at the upper (Ponsonby) end of the walk. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

Beagle Walk – Sun 20th June – Botanic Gardens, Manurewa

Location: Botanic Gardens, Manurewa
Date: Sunday 20th June 2021
Time: 9.45am for a 10am start
Meeting Place: Off Charles Prevost Drive

Parking: On Charles Prevost Drive or a carpark

Meeting Place: Park your car on Charles Prevost Drive (opposite number 61 or thereabouts) and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There is a carpark nearby but that is often full. There are toilets close by.

Route: Dogs are permitted in the Botanic gardens but must be on leash. There is an off leash area at the northern end near the Totara Park  end. These gardens are a lush and magnificent place to visit. There is even a children’s garden and a play area. There are mostly concrete paths suitable for most ages and mobility. A few dirt paths and slight inclines. May require boots in very wet weather but running shoes mostly ok. There is a café and visitors center. Very scenic walk with lots of themed gardens and home to more than 10,000 plants from around the world. More relaxed than most botanic gardens.

Directions: About 35-40 mins from the CBD. Travelling south on the Southern Motorway (SH1) exit at the Manurewa /Hill road exit (exit 451). Turn left onto Hill Road and the main entrance is the first driveway on the left. Charles Prevost Drive is off Hill Road.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

Beagle Walk – Sat 15th May – Bethells Beach (Te Henga), West Auckland

Location: Bethells Beach, West Auckland
Date: Saturday 15th May 2021
Time: 9.45am for a 10am start

Meeting Place: Car Parkat the end of Bethells Rd – see photos below and look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag.There are toilets here and a coffee cart type café that sometimes opens at weekends.

Route: Bethells is a wild surf beach that stretches 2 kms along the west coast and is made up of volcanic sand. It is a stunning landscape of unstable dunes, cliffs, rocks, a stream and caves. Endangered dotterels nest in the dunes and sometimes blue penguins roost in the sea cave at the south end of the beach – dogs must be on a lead on this part of the beach. Across the outflow of the Waitakere River is a great off leash area in Waitakere Bay. We will be crossing this river (which is usually ankle deep) so wear suitable footwear that can easily be removed or is able to get wet e.g. crocs.

Directions: Take the North Western Motorway to Exit 16 onto Lincoln Rd then turn right into Universal Drive. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Swanson Rd. Continue through Swanson and veer left into Scenic Dr. Turn right into Te Henga Rd and continue straight ahead onto Bethells Rd to the beach. Takes about 45 mins from central Auckland.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.

[New Date!] Beagle Walk and Fun Day Event

Great news!!! We have a New Date for the Beagle Walk and Fun Day Event!!! It is on Sunday the 28th March!!!

The usual pack walk will take place at 10am followed by an extravaganza of fun and games for hounds and humans and of course a yummy lunch with Easter eggs. And the raffle draw too! Doesn’t get better than that!

All breeds welcome- beagles love to play with everyone!

Lets keep fingers and paws crossed that the nasty old virus doesn’t stop us this time……

Venue: Cornwall Park, Greenlane West
Time: 10:00am
Date: Sunday 28 March 2021
Meeting place: Carpark with the pin in the Map below. Look for the Beagle Club flag flying high.

Walk starts around the park at 10.00 and will take approx. one hour. There are toilets located near the carpark shown on the Map.

After the walk there will be cold meats, salads and yummy sweet stuff for lunch, along with some fun and games plus the raffle.

Beagle Walk – Sun 7th February – Karangahake Gorge, Paeroa

Location: Karangahake Gorge, Paeroa
Date: Sunday 7th February 2021
Time: 9.45am for a 10am start

Meeting Place: Karangahake Gorge Reserve Car Park. Look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. There are toilets and water station there.

Route: The walk is mostly easy with a metal track but can get muddy at times so bring gumboots. There are also a few old rail tunnels so a torch could be useful as they can be dark (even though lit). The walk is a great exploration of the old mining days with remains of old train tracks and tunnels and a swing bridge (not sure how your beagle handles bridges so be aware). It is a gold heritage site and an historical wonderland. The scenery is amazing with views of the river and natural bush and deep valleys.

Directions: This gorge is 13 kms from Waihi and 8 kms from Paeroa. Located on State Highway 2, just south of Paeroa, it is about a 2-hour drive (130km) from Auckland and almost an hour from Hamilton. It is well signposted and parking is available right off the highway.

Walk Time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

On leash/Off leash:  This is an on leash area at all times. It is unusual for dogs to be allowed onto a Dept of Conservation area but dogs can walk some trails here if on a leash. Please contact Ray Linton Brown on 021618465 if you have any queries.

Beagle Walk – Sun 6th December – Waiatarua Reserve, Remuera

Location: Waiatarua Reserve, 98 Abbots Way, Remuera
Date: Sunday 6th December 2020

Meeting Place: Car Park off Abbots Way. Look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. This car park can get quite busy but there is another car park from the Grand drive entrance. There are toilets there.

Route: The walk is mostly flat with a gravel footpath. The path runs around an urban wetland restoration project with lots of open space and an off leash area for the dogs (although this is an unfenced area so dog control is required).

Directions: From the Southern motorway take the Greenland Rd exit toward Remuera. Continue onto Peach Parade; turn right onto Ladies Mile and left into Abbots Way.

Walk Time: Approximately 40 minutes.

Beagle Walk – Sat 21st November – Meola Reef Reserve, Point Chevalier

Location: Meola Reef Reserve, Point Chevalier
Date: Saturday 21st November 2020
Time: 9.45am for a 10am start
Meeting Place: Car Park off Meola Road

Meeting Place: Car Park off Meola Road. Look out for the Auckland Beagle Club flag. The car park for the Dog Park is quite small so you may have to park on Meola Road, which is quite narrow (many people park on berm or with two wheels on berm).

Route: The walk is mostly flat with a gravel/dirt footpath and grass. There are toilets near the car park. The area can get a bit muddy if it rains so bring robust footwear. There are great views of the Waitemata harbour across to Chelsea Sugar refinery.

Directions:Head towards 81- 189 Meola Rd Point Chevalier. Look for the car park on the opposite side from the sport fields and MOTAT aviation display.

Walk Time: Approximately 40 minutes.

On leash/Off leash: There is an off leash area in the designated field at the headland. This field is fully fenced so you can let your dog off and it is safe inside an enclosed area. There is a long grass area and water spots for swimming. This is a popular park and there will usually be other dogs playing around. It is fun for the dogs who can race around like lunatics in an enclosed area. The remainder of the
walk is on lead.

Route: Moire Park has a gravel track which winds through the park and bush. It has views of the Waitemata Harbor and a large children’s play area and basketball court. Parts of the walk can get muddy after rain so appropriate footwear is required.

Directions: From the Northwestern motorway take the Royal Road exit and enter the park off Granville Drive, which is off Moire Rd.

Walk Time: Approximately 60 minutes.
